An Introduction to CranioSacral Therapy
This next statement may blow your mind: The bones in our skull never completely fuse shut.
We are familiar with the “soft spots” on an infant’s head that lie between the cranial bone sutures. If you feel your head right now, you will no longer feel a soft spot. Our skull bones move closer together but they do not close. Between the bones run blood vessels, nerve fibers, collagen and elastic fibers. And if you gently rest your hands along the bones, with time and practice, you will be able to feel them moving. This movement is your craniosacral rhythm.
What is CranioSacral Therapy?
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system. This system is comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.

The CranioSacral System
The craniosacral system is a semi-closed hydraulic system contained within a tough waterproof membrane known as the Dura Mater (aka tough mother) that attaches to the bones of the skull and envelops the brain and spinal cord. This system produces and circulates our Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) through the ventricles of our brain and around our spinal cord. This CSF fluctuates with rhythmic pressure and aids in draining toxins from the brain. It is this change in pressure fluctuations that creates the craniosacral rhythm.
The Dura Mater that connects to the bones of the skull interconnects with all of the fascia that envelopes our organs and musculoskeletal compartments. If there is tension on the Dura Mater in one area of the body, it can pull on another area of the body and create pain or dysfunction.
Vis medicatrix naturae
CranioSacral Therapy facilitates the body's natural and innate healing processes to heal. Any treatment that utilizes the body's own healing mechanism is capable of initiating cure. (And curing is different than palliative treatment of symptoms). The naturopathic philosophy of Vis medicatrix naturae, or the healing power of the body, is that the body has the wisdom to put itself into balance and it is always working to do so. A symptom is the body signaling that there is an imbalance. By using the bones as a tool to identify and treat restrictions within the membrane, the body's life force, what CranioSacral Therapy creator Dr. John Upledger called "The Inner Physician", is able to rebalance itself. This is a powerful treatment modality for preventive health and to bolster resistance to disease.
If you suffer from migraines, brain fog, heavy metal toxicity, acid reflux, difficulty swallowing, tinnitus, lower back pain, sinusitis, scoliosis, ADHD, PTSD and trauma or if you are experiencing dementia, have had abdominal or pelvic surgery, grind your teeth, had alot of orthodonture, a history of concussions or were delivered by forceps, Craniosacral Therapy is a healing treatment that can help.
CranioSacral Therapy can help healthcare challenges associated with pain and dysfunction, including:
Migraine Headaches
Chronic Neck and Back Pain
Motor-Coordination Impairments
Colic
Autism
Central Nervous System Disorders
Orthopedic Problems
Concussions and Traumatic Brain Injuries
Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia
Spinal Cord Injuries
Scoliosis
Infantile Disorders
Learning Disabilities
Chronic Fatigue
Emotional Difficulties
Stress and Tension-Related Problems
Fibromyalgia and other Connective-Tissue Disorders
Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)
Neurovascular or Immune Disorders
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Post-Surgical Dysfunction
What to Expect During a Treatment
The CranioSacral Treatment is a relaxing 60 minute therapy during which time the CranioSacral Therapist uses the lightest touch possible to palpate and treat the cranium, sacrum and spinal tube. Imagine a piece of thin cellophane floating on top of a bowl of water. The force needed to move the cellophane across the surface without deforming it is the force used to work with the craniosacral system. During the treatment, restrictions are released in the craniosacral system, resulting in improved functioning of the central nervous system, as well as many other systems of the body, such as digestive, musculoskeletal, respiratory and circulatory.
At the end of the treatment you will feel relaxed. Over the next several days following treatment, you will note positive effects which could include improved alignment, mental clarity, less pain, better sleep, and reduced symptoms.

The secret something that is shared by all effective healing methods is
the process of leading the patient to an honest and truthful self-discovery.
This self-discovery is required for the inititation and continuation of self-healing; for it is only through self-healing - in contrast to curing - that patients can experience both permanent recovery and spiritual growth... the closer our perception of self approaches, the deeper our capacity for self healing becomes.
When there is a very close correspondance between self image and truth,
our healing powers may be virtually unlimited."
